How it all began
In 1939, Greek immigrant Chris Mitchell, chose a small corner of Northeast Ohio to open the neighborhood soda fountain and candy store that was to become Mitchell’s Fine Chocolates. There was a movie theater next door, and since this was before the days of in-house concession stands, our sweets shop became a popular place serving the eager residents of Cleveland Heights. A decade later, Chris would marry Penelope, the woman who would remember everyone’s face and favorite confection. Their son, William, took over the business in the late 1980’s, and later moved the manufacturing and retail showroom up to Cedar-Lee District of Cleveland Heights.
In 2016, Bill decided it was time to retire and sought a new generation to take over the business. After many months, a newlywed couple heard about the threatening closure of the business if a buyer was not found. Jason & Emily Hallaman started a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds necessary to begin the purchase of the business. The campaign was a roaring success, with support from all over the US to ensure that Mitchell’s would continue to serve it’s outstanding chocolates. Jason & Emily are passionate about maintaining the recipes and traditions of Mitchell’s Fine Chocolates, and continuing to provide delicious European style confections to many more generations.
